 TV Spotlight

Bronson Pinchot, who plays Balki, the immigrant by turns delighted and confused by American customs on ABC's "Perfect Strangers," was born to Russian / Italian parents in New York City.  By the time Pinchot was 3, the family had moved to Pasadena, Calif., where his divorced mother raised him, two brothers and sister.

He developed a love for painting, and following his graduation from high school, Pinchot entered Yale on scholarship as a fine arts major.  But while at New Haven, he began to act in school productions ("As You Like It," "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?") and decided to become an actor.

After graduation, Pinchot got his first New York role in, oddly enough, a play about Yale Whiffenpoofs called "Poor Little Lambs."  A casting director for "Risky Business" saw him in that play and signed him up as Tom Cruise's friend in the movie.  Pinchot has had other movie roles in "The Flamingo Kid," "After Hours," "Hot Resort" and a scene that wound up being cut from "Broadway Danny Rose."  But the film part for which he is most remembered is a brief one in "Beverly Hills Cop," as a snooty art-gallery clerk; he nearly ran off with the movie.

Then there were the television series.  Remember "Sara?"  Sure you do.  "Sara" was going to be the next "Mary Tyler Moore Show."  Everybody said so.  The problem was nobody watched it.  If they had, they would have seen Pinchot in the role of Dennis Kemper, the homosexual lawyer friend of the title character.  Sort of a "gay Gavin MacLeod," joked Pinchot to Us magazine before the series aired, when everybody could still afford to laugh.

When he's not playing Balki, Pinchot enjoys listening to 14th and 15th century music and (contrary to what you may have been led to believe by a certain instant-coffee commercial) collects 18th and 19th century Scandinavian furniture.
