Azalea Festival / Queen
TV Actress Will Reign

Rebeca Arthur, who stars as Mary Anne on a television series, Perfect Strangers, will reign as Queen Azalea XLII during the 1989 North Carolina Azalea Festival at Wilmington.

Her role as Mary Anne, an airline stewardess and neighbor of Balki and Larry (Bronson Pinchot and Mark Linn-Baker), was an outgrowth of a guest-starring role on the series in 1986.  Before joining the cast of Perfect Strangers, Ms. Arthur won a role in a pilot for a situation comedy, Anything for Love, and appeared on episodes of Remington Steele, Newhart, TV Bloopers, a Rodney Dangerfield special, and the movie About Last Night.

Ms. Arthur began a career as a dancer in her early teens.  At the University of Maryland, she switched her major from dance to dance-theater, and later enrolled in a drama school in New York City.

After a few years working with a private investigations firm and sandwiching in auditions, Ms. Arthur landed her first acting roles on two daytime serials, The Guiding Light and Search for Tomorrow.  From there she landed jobs in commercials and a play, which gave her the encouragement to move to Los Angeles.

Ms. Arthur will be crowned during a concert by Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons Saturday night as Trask Coliseum at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Queen Azalea will attend almost all festival events, including the variety show at Legion Stadium on Friday Night.  She will be the major attraction during the parade through downtown Wilmington Saturday morning.

Queen Azalea XLII will arrive aboard the Henrietta II at 10:15 a.m. Thursday at Riverfront Park.  The Queen's arrival is the official opening event of the N.C. Azalea Festival.
